# WordPress 7.1.4 Security Release: What Was Fixed And How To Update

## Key Takeaways

- WordPress 7.1.4 shipped on October 28, 2026 as a security release for the 7.1 branch, and the announcement recommends updating immediately.
- The release fixes twelve entries plus a bundled root certificate update, covering the upgrade process, block markup, core blocks, the Interactivity API, the Customizer and privacy tools.
- The block and Interactivity API fixes matter because most are stored XSS, and a core fix does not review the blocks that plugins add.
- To update safely, take a backup, update WordPress under Dashboard then Updates, update block and editor plugins in the same session, and confirm the version in Site Health.

WordPress 7.1.4 shipped on October 28, 2026, and it is a security release. The announcement says it “features fixes for multiple issues” and recommends updating immediately. If your site is on the 7.1 branch and does not auto-update, that is the one thing to do today.

This guide lists what the release fixes, explains which fixes touch blocks and the editor, and covers how to check that your sites are on 7.1.4. Every item below comes from the official [WordPress 7.1.4 announcement](https://wordpress.org/news/2026/10/wordpress-7-1-4/).

## What WordPress 7.1.4 Is

WordPress 7.1.4 is a short-cycle security release for the 7.1 branch. It is not a feature release. The next major version is WordPress 7.2, currently planned for December 8, 2026.

The security fixes were also backported to every branch that is eligible for security fixes, currently back through 4.7. Sites with automatic background updates enabled should start the update on their own. Everyone else can go to Dashboard, then Updates, then Update Now.

## What 7.1.4 Fixes

The announcement lists twelve entries plus an update to the bundled root certificates. The table groups them by what they touch.

| Area | Issue fixed |
| ---- | ----------- |
| Upgrade process | A weakness that can lead to remote code execution during the upgrade window |
| Block markup | A stored XSS with specially crafted block markup |
| Core blocks | Stored XSS in the Categories block, in Playlist and image blocks, and in the comments pagination next and previous blocks |
| Interactivity API | Multiple stored XSS issues, and a separate stored denial of service issue |
| Customizer | A stored XSS in selective refresh, and unpublished changesets that unauthenticated users could discover |
| Privacy and users | Privacy data removal requests that lead to stored XSS, and specially crafted user logins that lead to stored XSS |
| Notes | Notes readable by privileged users who lack access to edit the post the note is attached to |
| Certificates | An update to the bundled root certificates after the eMudhra revocation |

The announcement credits a mix of outside researchers and members of the WordPress Security Team for the reports.

## Why The Block And Interactivity Fixes Matter

Most of the list is stored cross-site scripting. Stored XSS means a script is saved on the site, then runs in the browser of whoever views the affected page or screen. Several entries involve blocks and the Interactivity API, which are the parts of WordPress that block plugins build on.

That has a practical consequence. A core fix covers core blocks. It does not review the blocks that plugins add. After you update core, check that your block plugins are also current, because a plugin that outputs saved content without escaping it is a separate problem that a core release cannot patch.

## How To Update Safely

- Take a backup, or confirm your host took one in the last day.
- Open Dashboard, then Updates, and update WordPress to 7.1.4.
- Update your block and editor plugins in the same session.
- Load the front page, one post, and the editor. Confirm nothing is broken.
- Check Tools, then Site Health. It shows the running version.

If you manage many sites, check the version on each one instead of assuming auto-updates ran. A site on a managed host usually updates by itself, but a site with auto-updates switched off will sit on the old version until someone clicks.

## What This Doesn’t Cover

This guide does not include exploit details, and the official announcement does not publish them either. It also does not cover the earlier critical PHP release or the WordPress 7.2 beta. For those, read the guides below.
