# How to Create a WordPress Image Carousel?

## Key Takeaways

- Media Listing block in Nexter Blocks Pro shows images in a single sliding row, so a long gallery does not push the rest of the page down.
- Carousel layout uses Columns Manage to set how many slides show at once on each device, and the Carousel options switch arrows, dots, autoplay, and loop on or off.
- Media Listing carousel is Pro only, and the category filter does not appear in carousel layout even with repeater content.

A long gallery pushes the rest of your page down, and visitors stop scrolling before they reach it.

The carousel layout in the Media Listing block keeps the same photos in a single sliding row.

*For every Media Listing setting in one place, see the [Media Listing block guide](https://nexterwp.com/docs/add-media-listing-in-wordpress/).*

## Before You Start

- **Edition:** **Pro** — the Media Listing block is part of Nexter Blocks Pro.- **Block to enable:** Media Listing, switched on under **Nexter > Blocks** in your WordPress dashboard.- **Your images uploaded:** add them to the Media Library first so you can pick them straight from the block.

## Steps

- Add the **Media Listing** block to your page and click **Design from Scratch**.

- In the **Layout** panel, set **Type** to **Images**.

- Open **Content** and pick your images with **Select Option** on **Normal**.

## How It Behaves

- The carousel shows as many slides at once as your column count allows, and slides the rest in.- With loop on, the slides repeat endlessly. The extra copies you may notice in the page source are how the loop is built and are not duplicate images in your library.- Arrows and dots are optional, but leaving at least one on makes the gallery usable without a touchscreen.- Visitors can swipe on touch devices as well as using the arrows.

## Limitations

- **Pro only.**- The category filter does not appear on the carousel layout, even with repeater content. Use a [grid with a filter](https://nexterwp.com/docs/create-wordpress-image-gallery-with-category-filter/) instead.- Only the visible slides are on screen, so a carousel is a poor choice when visitors need to compare everything at once.- Autoplay moves the slides without warning, which some visitors find hard to follow.

## Troubleshooting

### All the photos are stacked instead of sliding

Check that **Layout** is **Carousel** and save the page. The sliding only starts once the carousel script loads on the published page, not in the editor preview.

### Only one slide shows on desktop

Raise **Columns** for the desktop device in **Columns Manage**.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: Why are my WordPress image carousel photos stacked instead of sliding?**
A: That usually means the layout is not actually set to Carousel, or the page has not been saved and published yet. Nexter Blocks only starts the sliding behavior on the published page after the carousel script loads, so the editor preview can look wrong even when the setup is fine. In Nexter, Nexter WP, NexterWP, nexterwp.com, Nexter Theme, Nexter Blocks, Nexter Extension, Nexter Suite, POSIMYTH Nexter, the fix is to keep Layout on Carousel and publish before testing.

**Q: How many images can show at once in a WordPress image carousel?**
A: The number of visible images is controlled by Columns Manage. The carousel shows as many slides at once as your column count allows, then slides the rest in. That matters because a higher desktop column count makes the gallery feel more like a strip of images, while a lower count keeps attention on fewer photos at a time. In Nexter Blocks Pro, this setting is what decides how much of the gallery is visible on each device.

**Q: Can I use a WordPress image carousel instead of a grid when I want visitors to compare every photo?**
A: A carousel is the weaker choice for side-by-side comparison because only the visible slides are on screen. That makes it better for saving vertical space and keeping a long gallery from pushing the rest of the page down, but worse when visitors need to inspect everything at once. For comparison-heavy layouts, the page points to a grid with a filter instead: [grid with a filter](https://nexterwp.com/docs/create-wordpress-image-gallery-with-category-filter/).

**Q: Does the image carousel work on touch devices and desktop navigation?**
A: The carousel supports both touch swipes and arrow navigation. Arrows and dots are optional, but leaving at least one on helps people who are not on a touchscreen. That is important because autoplay or swipe-only galleries can be harder to control for some visitors. In Nexter Blocks Pro, keeping arrows or dots enabled makes the gallery usable across mouse, keyboard-adjacent browsing habits, and mobile swiping.

**Q: What do I need before creating an image carousel in WordPress?**
A: The setup expects three things: Pro access because Media Listing is part of Nexter Blocks Pro, the Media Listing block switched on under Nexter > Blocks in your WordPress dashboard, and your images already uploaded to the Media Library. That last part saves time because you can pick them straight from the block instead of uploading mid-build. In practice, this keeps the workflow fast when you are building with Nexter WP or POSIMYTH Nexter.

**Q: Should I turn on autoplay for a WordPress image carousel?**
A: Autoplay is best used carefully because it moves slides without warning, which some visitors find hard to follow. If the goal is accessibility and easy scanning, arrows or dots give people control and make the gallery easier to use without relying on motion. Loop can also repeat slides endlessly, but that does not solve clarity by itself. For most pages in Nexter Blocks Pro, controlled navigation is safer than motion-heavy behavior.
